What is ADHD?

ADHD, or Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder, is a neurodevelopmental condition that affects how the brain manages focus, organization, and self-regulation. While often thought of as a childhood condition, ADHD is common in both children and adults, and it can impact school, work, relationships, and daily routines.

People with ADHD may struggle with attention, impulsivity, or hyperactivity—but the way it shows up can look very different from person to person. Some people have difficulty staying focused, finishing tasks, or remembering details. Others feel restless, talkative, or easily distracted. Many live with a mix of both.

ADHD is not a sign of laziness or lack of intelligence—it’s about how the brain is wired. With the right support, strategies, and sometimes therapy or coaching, people with ADHD can learn to manage challenges and build on their strengths.

What are Symptoms of ADHD?

The symptoms of ADHD can look different for everyone, and they often fall into two main categories: inattention and hyperactivity/impulsivity. Some people experience more of one set of symptoms, while others have a combination.

Common symptoms of inattention include:

  • Trouble staying focused on tasks or conversations.

  • Difficulty following through on instructions or finishing projects.

  • Frequently losing or misplacing items like keys, phones, or school materials.

  • Struggling with organization, planning, or time management.

  • Forgetfulness in daily activities.

Common symptoms of hyperactivity and impulsivity include:

  • Feeling restless, fidgety, or unable to sit still.

  • Talking excessively or interrupting others.

  • Acting without thinking or making impulsive decisions.

  • Difficulty waiting turns or managing impatience.

  • Constantly “on the go” or feeling driven by energy.

While these symptoms may start in childhood, many people continue to experience them into adulthood. ADHD can make school, work, and relationships challenging, but with the right strategies and support, symptoms can be managed and strengths can shine through.

ADHD is not a limitation; it's a different way of thinking that can lead to incredible innovation.

The Positives of ADHD

While ADHD can bring challenges, it also comes with unique strengths and abilities. Many people with ADHD are creative, energetic, and see the world in ways others may not. Recognizing these positives can help shift the focus from “what’s wrong” to “what’s possible.”

Upsides of ADHD may include:

  • Creativity and innovation – Thinking outside the box and generating fresh ideas.

  • High energy and enthusiasm – Bringing passion and excitement into projects, sports, or hobbies.

  • Hyperfocus – The ability to dive deeply into activities of interest and achieve incredible productivity.

  • Adaptability – Quick to adjust when plans change or when problem-solving is needed.

  • Curiosity and imagination – Seeing connections others miss and approaching challenges with new perspectives.

  • Resilience – Learning to navigate challenges often builds persistence and strength.

ADHD is more than a diagnosis—it’s a different way of experiencing the world. With the right support, people with ADHD can harness these strengths and thrive in school, work, relationships, and life.

I use evidence-based approaches like Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), mindfulness, and ADHD-informed coaching techniques to support focus, emotional regulation, and confidence. Areas of Support

These three types form the framework for diagnosing ADHD, and treatment approaches are tailored to address the unique challenges of each.

Hyperactive/Impulsive ADHD:

Individuals with this type experience a constant need for movement and struggle with self-control. They may fidget, squirm, interrupt others, blurt out answers, and find it hard to remain seated. Children with hyperactive ADHD often seem as if they are "driven by a motor," engaging in excessive physical activity and talking non-stop.

Inattentive ADHD:

Those with inattentive ADHD struggle to maintain focus and often make careless mistakes. They find it difficult to follow instructions, organize tasks, and manage activities. With weak working memory, they may easily lose items, become distracted by their environment, and have trouble completing tasks.

Combined ADHD:

This type involves a mix of both hyperactive/impulsive and inattentive symptoms. Individuals with combined ADHD display behaviours from both categories, struggling with focus, organization, and self-control. They may experience difficulty staying seated and quiet while also facing challenges with attention and task management.

Approaches We Use In ADHD Therapy

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) helps individuals with ADHD by identifying and reshaping unhelpful thought patterns that lead to procrastination, disorganization, and poor time management. Through CBT, clients learn how to break tasks into manageable steps, develop routines, and challenge negative beliefs that impact motivation. This therapy empowers individuals to focus more effectively, make intentional decisions, and build habits that promote long-term success.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT)

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) supports emotional regulation and distress tolerance, addressing the intense emotions often associated with ADHD. Clients learn strategies to manage impulsivity, reduce frustration, and handle challenges in healthier ways. With DBT, individuals build resilience by staying calm under pressure, improving relationships, and creating a sense of balance and emotional stability.

Skills Training

Skills training focuses on strengthening key areas like organization, planning, social communication, and problem-solving, which are often challenging for those with ADHD. This modality helps clients build systems for managing daily responsibilities, like using planners, to-do lists, and reminders. By developing these practical skills, individuals feel more capable of managing life’s demands and navigating personal and professional tasks effectively.

Mindfulness teaches individuals to be present in the moment, reducing the tendency toward distraction and impulsive behaviour that often comes with ADHD. Practicing mindfulness helps clients become more aware of their thoughts, feelings, and actions, fostering self-regulation and emotional calm. This approach not only reduces stress but also enhances attention, making it easier to stay focused on the task at hand.
